Liane: An Afternoon Walk With a Special
Pony
This is an excerpt from a letter to our
Director, Marianne Alexander, by Liane Langbehn, State Director for
Maryland. We think it is a lovely expression of the joy our ponies
bring to our volunteers—even in the most ordinary activities...
8-30-00 ...Yesterday
Matthew and
I decided to play with the ponies all afternoon. First we took the
harness a friend donated and got TREVOR all "dressed up" (*think* I did
it all right). The good news is that it fits! He walked around the
field a few times and while not thrilled with his new "outfit" was a
very good boy. He had a few carrots and went to rest in his stall while
we took DAAGHN for his walk....
We started walking just to the park but had an
adventure instead and walked to our house (the barn backs to the
University of Maryland campus, but our house sits right in the middle
of campus).
My perfect pony walked:
past soccer games
over wooden bridges
through puddles
and a creek
over scarey lines painted in the parking lot
past scarey steam vents
past sheep, cows and horses
up and down ramps
up and down curbs along the sidewalk
up wide stairs along the road with bikers and rollerbladers
on asphalt
on gravel
on cobblestones
on sand
through a footbal game
through a quad of dorms
and up to the front yard where he happily grazed until it was time to
go home...
He was simply fantastic! He took treats and
pats and hugs from passersby and never looked twice at ANYTHING. He
drank from the campus fountain and *may* appear in the campus
newspaper.
So that was our fun for yesterday-today I teach
but who knows what could happen tomorrow.....
